"Log Cabin" Quilt Card

I'm all for using up scraps of paper and this is a nice easy way to do it.

Start with one of Regal's aperture cards (XSQ3).  This one has a nice little space at the bottom just right for a greeting so I'v put a black strip across, which leaves a square to fill.  So, working with folded strips I've just worked my way around the outside edge, taping the ends to the back of the card, and gradually working my way to the middle.  I've finished off with a little heart sticker.

I've sort of broken the rules with the design - usually the middle of this style of Iris folding is either shiny or red and hearts are usually the latter but I've chosen black and white to match my greeting.  The last row of the left of the heart "should" be green but I've made it red to frame the heart.  In short - when you make a card - do what pleases you!

Regal's "Indian Window" card is one of their more unusual three panel cards.  The window in the middle panel is great for iris folding.

The popularity of iris folding comes and goes, but it never vails to make an impact.

I've just used a square template for the bottom of the shape (there are lots of free ones available on-line) and then "freestyled" the top.  I've chosen 80g (i.e. thin and cheap!) paper for all the colours except the gold in the centre and roof which stands out and tends to "lift" the other papers.

I've just added an adhesive jewel (Kaiser) to the "eye".  Now that I look at it in the picture, it's not exactly in the middle, is it? Oh well..........

There is plenty of room to add a greeting - at the bottom or diagonally on either side at the top or over the actual folding!
If you varied the colours it could suit almost any occasion - add a bit of lace and lots of white for a wedding card, make it in pastels for a baby or in personal favourites for either men or women.  As mentioned you can always add a bit of lace or ribbon or patterned paper or metal or embossed card or whatever you like really!  If you haven't tried Iris Folding, think about giving it a go.  Its easy and fun.

Although this iris-folded teapot (the pre-cut cards, NO55 are available from Regal Craft Cards), was not made specifically for Christmas, the red, white and gold colour scheme could easily fit the bill.

Japanese papers are lovely, but expensive, so iris folding is a good way to use up small leftovers for maximum impact.

The maker of this card is a bit of a mystery - no one at work remembers....but if this is your card and you'd like to claim credit please let me know and I'll happily update the post!!

Whoever made it has adapted an iris folding template designed for a circle, and added a handcut corner.  The bottom is a strip of paper with two hole-punched circle at either end.  If you wanted to add a tiny sprig of holly to the side of the lid and an appropriate greeting, it would make a great seasonal card.

FOR SOMEONE SPECIAL

One of the really nice things about working at Regal is that we often have the chance to see some really great cards made by our lovely customers.

Kay brought this one, which she has made for a special person, in today, and has very kindly allowed me to pop it up so that you can see it too!

She has used a white base card but added a red panel with a large and several small heart cut-outs.  Kay has added an individual twist by Iris folding under the large heart but adding roses to the middle, and using the iridescent paper that would more traditionally be used there as an underlay for the red panel.

The result is a beautiful card which is ideal for Valentine's Day, but which could also be given on many other occasions - thanks for sharing your work Kay.

IRIS FOLDED DOLPHINS

This card is a survivor - its been used as a sample card on the counter, served its time on our display board and even survived a couple of months in the window.  Its a little crumpled but I thought Maz's iris-folded dolphins were too nice not to share before they reached their final resting place. The base card with dolphin cut-outs is available from Regal, and a selection of dark and light grey papers with a shiny textured silver for the "iris" were used.  A couple of  silver peel-off stickers complete the card.  (And yes....I promise to include an un-crumpled card from Maz within the next couple of weeks!!)
